Lake Ziway Rift Valley Tour

Lake Ziway is the largest lake in Ethiopia’s Central Rift Valley home to a variety of aquatic and bird species. Five volcanic islands dot Lake Ziway with hiking trails, forests, and monasteries; Tulu Gudo is famed for once being the hiding place of the Ark of the Covenant when Queen Yodit Gudit (ruler of Axum) threatened to destroy it.

Those that transported the Ark safely to Tulu Gudobe came known as the Zay people, the guardians of the Ark. Tulu Gudo’s MaryanTsion monastery contains manuscripts that are said to have accompanied the Arkon its journey to the island.

In the morning drive to Lake Ziway, one of the rift valley lakes. Visit Lake Ziway referred as the bird watchers’ paradise.

The lake is also known for its population of birds and hippopotamuses as well as supporting a fishing industry. In the afternoon drive back to Addis. On your way stop to pause at Debre Zeiet crater lakes and finally continue your drive to Addis Ababa. Transfer to the airport if you have international flight.
