Debre Libanos Monastery and Portuguese Bridge Tour

Debre Libanos Monastery lies northwest of Addis Ababa. Founded in the thirteenth century by Saint TekleHaimanot, the Monastery’s chief abbot was the second most powerful official in the Ethiopian Church.

The Monastery complex sits on a terrace between a cliff and the gorge of one of the tributaries of the Abbay River (the Blue Nile). Along the side of the church, visitors may cross a river and proceed on foot up a hill where allegedly, SaintTekle Haimanot, prayed for many years; legend says that he stood on one foot for so long that the other foot fell off.

In the morning transfer to Debra Libanos Monastery lying 110km north of Addis Ababa. Visit the 13th c. monastery established by Abune (father) Tekle Haimanot, the collections in the church museum, enjoy breath-taking scenery and cataracts of waterfalls created by Jemma River, and see from close distance the endemic Gelada Baboon.

Also walk around and pause at the ruin of the so called the “Portuguese bridge”. The interior of the church is adorned with beautiful, stained glasses reflecting biblical history. The cave which is the integral part of the Monastery contains a spring whose water is considered holy and is the object of pilgrimages. Then drive back to Ababa through the fertile Selale plateau, the land of the hospitable and gracious local people. Transfer to the airport if you have international flight.
