Often described as the Camelot of Africa, Gondar was once the capital of Ethiopia from 1626 until the mid-19th century. The main architectural centerpiece is the Royal Enclosure known as Fasil Ghebbi (UNESCO World Heritage Site) containing six fortified stone castles including the three-story original 

Castle plus chancery built by Emperor Fasil in the 1630’s.

Nearby there is the circular Church of Debre Berhan Selassie (Mountain of the Enlightened Trinity) with its exquisite 17th-century ecclesiastical paintings as well as paintings of cherubic angels with wings, which adorn the ceiling and walls.

Debre Libanos Monastery lies northwest of Addis Ababa. Founded in the thirteenth century by Saint TekleHaimanot, the Monastery’s chief abbot was the second most powerful official in the Ethiopian Church. 

The Monastery complex sits on a terrace between a cliff and the gorge of one of the tributaries of the Abbay River (the Blue Nile). Along the side of the church, visitors may cross a river and proceed on foot up a hill where allegedly, SaintTekle Haimanot, prayed for many years; legend says that he stood on one foot for so long that the other foot fell off.
